Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, was ruler of Austria-Hungary for almost the entire duration of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy. He became Emperor of Austria in 1848; under the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, the Austrian Empire was transformed into the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy, with separate parliaments and prime ministers. In July, 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Franz Joseph was on vacation during much of the July Crisis, but chose to respect the judgement of his ministers. At the age of 84, he was unable to take an active part in the ensuing First World War. He died on November 21, 1916, and was succeeded as Emperor by his grand-nephew, Charles I.
