Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, was the heir to the dual throne of the Austria-Hungary. Being the heir of Duke Francis V of Modena, he was one of the richest men in Austria. He was also an accomplished game hunter. His political views differed significantly from those of Franz Joseph; he felt that the best hope for Austria-Hungary was political reform, wherein all nationalities in the monarchy would achieve greater autonomy. He was assassinated at Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, an event that precipitated the First World War.
