John French

Field Marshal Sir John French was Commander in Chief of the British Expeditionary Force. He met with varying degrees of success in France in 1914 and 1915; however, his handling of the Battle of Loos, combined with the fact that he did not get along well with French General Joffre and a general loss of confidence in him by the government forced him to resign in 1915. He was appointed Commander in Chief of the British Home Forces in December 1915. During his tenure in this position, he suppressed the Easter Rising in Ireland. In 1918 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
