At the start of the First World War, Admiral Sir John Jellicoe was given the role of Commander in Chief of the British Home Fleet, which was renamed the Grand Fleet. He was in command at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The battle was not a decisive victory for Great Britain, which caused Jellicoe to be criticized. He served as First Sea Lord from November 1916 to December 1917. He believed that nothing could be done about German U-Boats, which led to his dismissal as First Sea Lord. He received a promotion to Admiral of the Fleet on April 3, 1919.
