This battle consisted of several engagements; in the north, the first was the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in which British troops (primarily the Canadian Corps) captured an escarpment at Vimy, but at the cost of over 10,000 casualties. Further south the British also attacked east of Arras at the First Battle of the Scarpe, capturing an important trench, and further south at the First Battle of Bullecourt, where they were forced to retreat.
