The Second Battle of Arras was a battle that book place on the Western Front from April 9 to May 17, 1917. This battle consisted of several engagements; in the north, the first was the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in which British troops (primarily the Canadian Corps) captured an escarpment at Vimy, but at the cost of over 10,000 casualties. Further south the British also attacked east of Arras at the First Battle of the Scarpe, capturing an important trench, and further south at the First Battle of Bullecourt, where they were forced to retreat. There was a brief hiatus in fighting, which resumed towards the end of April. In the several engagements between April 23 and May 17, the British made little further progress and failed to make a decisive breakthrough.
