First Battle of the Masurian Lakes

The First Battle of the Masurian Lakes took place from September 7 to September 14, 1914. After defeating the Russian Second Army at the Battle of Tannenberg, General Paul von Hindenburg turned his attention to the Russian First Army. The battle resulted in a Russian defeat even though the Russians outnumbered the Germans by a two-to-one margin. While the Russians were able to make an orderly retreat, the end result of that battle was that Germany had evicted the Russian troops from Germany.
